Position Title: Volunteer Shelter Assistant at Turning Point

As a Volunteer Shelter Assistant, you will play a vital role in improving the quality of life for individuals and families who come to Turning Point seeking safety and support. Your efforts will directly contribute to creating a nurturing and empowering environment where survivors can begin their journey toward healing and independence.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Processing Donations: Assist with sorting, organizing, and processing incoming donations, including clothing, toiletries, household items, and other essential supplies.

  2. Room Maintenance: Help maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of shelter rooms and communal spaces by cleaning and tidying up as needed.

  3. General Cleaning: Support the shelter staff in performing general cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and sanitizing common areas.

  4. Organizing and Putting Away Donations: Ensure that donated items are properly stored and accessible to residents, making it easier for them to access essential items as needed.

  5. Preparing Intake Kits: Assemble intake kits for adults and children entering the shelter, including basic necessities such as toiletries, bedding, clothing, and comfort items.

  6. Trauma-Informed Care: Approach all interactions with residents in a trauma-informed manner, recognizing the unique needs and experiences of survivors of domestic violence.

Qualifications:

  • Compassionate and empathetic attitude toward individuals and families experiencing crisis or trauma.
  • Willingness to learn and adhere to trauma-informed principles and practices.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Flexibility to assist with a variety of tasks as needed.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with shelter staff and other volunteers in a team-oriented environment.
